How Often Should You Change Your Mattress? A Brief Guide

by Viz Beds 07 Aug 2026 0 Comments

A mattress rarely becomes uncomfortable overnight. Changes to your mattress often occur gradually, making them easy to overlook. You might wake up with a stiff back, find yourself turning more during the night or notice that the dip beneath your usual sleeping position no longer disappears.

This often leaves people asking: how often should you change your mattress, and how can you tell when yours has reached the end of its useful life?

In general, most mattresses should be reviewed after around seven years and commonly last between seven and ten years. Age is only one part of the decision, though. The condition of the mattress, how it feels, and the quality of your sleep are usually more useful indicators.

This guide explains how long different mattresses may last, the warning signs to check and the steps that could help you get more comfortable use from your current mattress.

How Often Should You Change Your Mattress?

Most mattresses last around seven to ten years. You may need to change yours sooner if it has visible sagging, feels uneven or no longer supports you comfortably.

There is no fixed expiry date that applies to every mattress. A well-made mattress used with a suitable base may remain comfortable for longer than expected. A heavily used or lower-quality mattress could begin losing support much sooner.

A mattress in a spare room will usually experience less wear than one shared by two adults every night. Body weight, sleeping position, moisture, ventilation and maintenance can all affect how quickly its materials soften.

Changes in your own needs matter too. The mattress that suited you several years ago may no longer feel right following an injury, a change in sleeping position or the introduction of a partner.

How Long Do Mattresses Last in Everyday Use?

When people ask “how long do mattresses last?”, the most realistic answer is that quality and use matter just as much as the type of mattress.

Seven to ten years is a useful general range, although two mattresses made from similar materials can age very differently. The quality of the springs or foam, the weight placed on the mattress and the support beneath it can all affect its lifespan.

A long warranty does not necessarily mean the mattress will remain comfortable for the full warranty period. Warranties usually cover specific manufacturing faults rather than ordinary softening, wear or changes in personal preference.

The bed base can also influence how quickly a mattress wears. Damaged slats, large gaps or an uneven frame may create unsupported areas. Before replacing a mattress, inspect the base to make sure the new one will sit on a stable and suitable surface.

People using an adjustable base should choose a mattress designed to flex repeatedly without damaging its internal structure. Our adjustable bed mattress collection includes options made for this type of setup.

What Are the Signs Your Mattress Needs Replacing?

Your body and the condition of your bed often provide a clearer answer than the date on your receipt. Common signs include:

  • A visible dip remains after you get out of bed.

  • The sleeping surface feels lumpy or uneven.

  • Springs can be felt or heard more clearly than before.

  • The edges feel weak when you sit or lie near them.

  • You wake with new stiffness or discomfort.

  • Your partner’s movement disturbs you more than it used to.

  • You regularly sleep better in another bed.

  • You struggle to find a comfortable sleeping position.

One symptom does not automatically prove that your mattress is responsible. Ongoing pain or sleep problems should be discussed with an appropriate healthcare professional.

Several signs appearing together suggest that the mattress or base deserves a closer inspection.

At Viz Beds, we manufacture beds and mattresses in West Yorkshire. When assessing an older mattress, we recommend checking the entire sleep system rather than looking at the surface alone. Inspect the edges, test whether the surface returns to shape and make sure the frame or base remains level.

Can a Mattress Topper Delay Replacement?

A mattress topper may change how firm or soft the surface feels. It can be useful when a mattress remains supportive but needs a little more cushioning.

A topper cannot repair broken springs, collapsed foam or a lasting dip. Placing extra padding over an uneven mattress may temporarily hide the problem without restoring proper support.

Think of a topper as a comfort adjustment rather than a repair. If the mattress beneath it is damaged or no longer supports you evenly, replacement is likely to be the more sensible option.

Can You Make a Mattress Last Longer?

Proper care cannot restore support that has already been lost, though it may reduce avoidable wear.

  • Use the correct base. Follow the manufacturer’s guidance on slat spacing, divan bases and adjustable frames.

  • Rotate the mattress when advised. Turning it from head to foot can help distribute wear.

  • Do not flip it without checking. Many modern mattresses are designed to be used on one side only.

  • Use a breathable protector. This can reduce the effect of spills, perspiration and everyday marks.

  • Air the bed regularly. Pull the bedding back to allow moisture to escape.

  • Clean it carefully. Our step-by-step mattress cleaning guide explains how to refresh the surface without soaking the fillings.

Avoid bending or folding a sprung mattress unless the manufacturer confirms that it is designed to flex.

Should You Replace the Mattress or the Whole Bed?

You may only need a new mattress if the bed frame or divan remains stable, level and suitable for the replacement.

Check the base carefully before deciding. Cracked or bowed slats, loose frame joints, uneven sections, worn castors or feet, and mismatched dimensions may all suggest that replacing the whole bed would be more practical. You should also confirm that the base is suitable for the type of mattress you plan to buy, particularly if you are switching to a heavier or more flexible model.

Your needs may also have changed since you bought your current bed. You might now share it with a partner, need easier access or prefer a different sleeping position.

A replacement should solve the problems you have now rather than simply copy what you bought several years ago.

Is It Time to Change Your Mattress?

Use this quick check to decide what to do next.

Keep it: The mattress remains comfortable, level and supportive, with no lasting dips or damaged areas.

Monitor it: There is some surface softening, but you still sleep comfortably, and the mattress returns to shape.

Consider replacing it: There is visible sagging, uneven support, damaged edges or a clear decline in your sleep quality.

Lie on both sides of the mattress in your usual sleeping position and check it in daylight. Look at the base underneath rather than assuming the mattress is the only source of the problem.

Find a Mattress That Suits the Way You Sleep

Knowing how long a mattress should last gives you a useful starting point, but your comfort and support should guide the final decision.

If your mattress remains even and comfortable, there may be no need to replace it simply because it has reached a particular age. If it is sagging, damaged or affecting your sleep, trying to extend its use may no longer be worthwhile.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
